Opening: 6pm, 8 October 2008
Curious, Whetstone & Frankley is thrilled to announce their special new show of handmade jewellery, Shine!, opening at 6pm on Wednesday 8 October 2008.
Shine! is a treasure trove of unique pieces, handcrafted by a selection of Cape Town's finest jewellery artisans. Using the best natural materials and their playful imaginations, the group has created delightful once-off pieces. At Shine! you'll find watches of ebony, bracelets with silver charms cast from real flowers and miniature fishpond rings. How can you resist?
Shine! is an opportunity to discover your own special and precious piece. As Firepetals' Adi Cloete says, “When I meet a person wearing an unusual piece of jewellery, it tells me they have a sense of adventure. To me jewellery is not just beautiful adornment, but an extension of a person’s individuality.”
About the artists
Firepetals is Adeline Joubert and Adi Cloete. Their materials include a combination of precious metals with gemstones, diamonds, glass beadwork, wood and found objects. The resulting pieces become precious objects d’art and an extension of a person’s individuality. Adeline's tongue-in-cheek 3D miniatures of animals and fish are among their popular range.
When Frieda Lühl finished her studies as a jewellery designer and formal apprentice as a goldsmith she soon started her own workshop. Her simple designs are affectionately crafted to perfection, incorporating natural materials, contrasting in texture, colour and density, framed in silver and gold.
Nic Bladen trained in the precise techniques of dental technology before turning his hand to bronze casting. Nic began experimenting with casting flowers and leaves, but it was only when a goldsmith friend taught him the basics of jewellery-making that Nic started creating the type of work for which has become well-known. Nic's delicate and sensitive range of botanical jewellery speaks of a moment captured and draws attention to the overlooked, to plants and flowers that grow on the sides of the road, in hedges, between paving stones and on the mountains.
Lin Eppel, an English teacher and textile artist, teamed up with her daughter Jane Eppel, a fine artist, and started creating jewellery. Their pieces for Shine! reflect Silvereppels' somewhat whimsical aesthetic. Bunnies on clouds and silver fish with moonstone eyes share the stage with squirrels and delicate multi-strand necklaces of lapis, turquoise and coral. Jane and Lynn have recently collaborated with Nic Bladen, and are very excited to showcase the first few pieces of this creative partnership.
Marius Koen's Manufacturing Darme ranges utilises natural elements such as the wood, gemstones, metal and other found objects, combining them all into a long lasting product. Marius likes the idea of the mechanics within jewellery pieces such as hinges and clasps – his ebony watches and olivewood sungalsses are avant guarde and perfect for display, but definitely wearable.
Joelene Kritzinger studied at Stellenbosch and obtained a BA Fine Art (Jewellery Design and manufacturing). Joelene works in gold and silver and enjoys using texture, and stones and beads for colour in her work.
